Frequently Asked Questions
What are the steps to Leveling?1: ScalpingThe lawn should be scalped as close as possible to the ground to a minimum of 1” so that we are leveling the ground and not the grass. This will give the best results for your leveling project.
2: FertilizingIn order to obtain the fastest recovery of your lawn, it is best to fertilize a day or two before with a high nitrogen fertilizer such as Scott’s Lawn starter. This will enable your lawn to spring back quickly.
3: LevelingOn the day of leveling: We will arrive with our crew and spot treat the deep areas with material by hand followed by spreading material throughout the area to be leveled, after that we follow up with using specific specialized tools such as our custom-made drags to complete the actual leveling process.
*We do our best to get the highest quality of material from 3rd party vendors. If using Sandy Loam, it is possible at times to have small clumps of dirt in the material. This is nothing to be concerned about and will typically breakdown after a few waterings. This is something that is outside our control and happens occasionally especially when using Sandy Loam, this never happens when using straight Mason Sand* |

4: IrrigationIrrigation is the most important step in order to obtain the best results and the fastest recovery. It’s important to irrigate your lawn as frequently as possible, Bermuda grass is a weed and one thing it likes is water and heat. If possible, try to irrigate your lawn every day, twice a day for the first week or two along with your normal watering schedule or until you see good growth, then you can return to your normal watering schedule. We also recommend fertilizing every 3-4 weeks, this is called spoon feeding and will ensure that your lawn has enough nutrition to recover as quickly as possible.

What material do you use to level a lawn?
This depends on how bumpy and uneven the lawn is? We typically will use Screened Sandy Loam on yards that are very bad and bumpy. This has worked great for us and our clients. We have leveled over 100 lawns from 5,000 sqft to 30,000 sqft with great success! If the lawn is not in too bad of shape, we can use Mason Sand. We will evaluate your lawn and make the best cost-effective recommendation to get the results that you desire. That could be fixing ankle breakers, seems from bad installation, or maybe you want to cut with a reel mower? In either case we can help you!!
How long will it take for my lawn to recover?
This depends on several variables, watering frequency, temps, rain, and fertilization. Depending on the time of the year it typically takes about 2-4 weeks to recover, however it could take longer in smaller areas such as shady patches deeper areas that were filled over 1” can take a little longer, but don’t worry. Bermuda will grow through and across almost anything. It just may take some time.
What should I do if I have hard patchy crusty areas?
We suggest that you try to break them up with either a garden rake or a garden weasel, followed by watering that area. This will help move along the growth in those areas.
When can I mow my newly leveled lawn?
We suggest that you wait at least one week to mow your lawn. If you’re using a Reel mower, we suggest even possibly waiting longer depending how much growth you have? We also suggest that when you do start mowing that you mow twice to three times a week, this enables the lawn to thicken up and spread horizontally.
When should I fertilize my lawn after leveling?
Immediately after the leveling has been done you should fertilize your lawn. We prefer using fast acting starter fertilizers in order to get the nutrients into the soil. Lawn Starter fertilizers such as Scotts Starter Fertilizer seems to have been working great and is not expensive, High Nitrogen Fertilizers, Urea fertilizers are also perfect for jump starting your grass recovery and keep the grass healthy and growing. Slow-release fertilizers such at Milorganite, Weed and Feed are slow release and will not get you the quick boast that you need.
When can I level my yard again?
This depends on the time of the year as well as how fast your lawn recovered after the first leveling? Its not outside the norm to level your lawn twice in one season, especially if Sandy Loam is being used for the first leveling. We see lawns recover quicker using Sandy Loam for the first leveling.
Will fertilizing my yard frequently burn my grass?
No, unless it wasn’t applied correctly or spilled onto the lawn or if its 100% UREA. Most fertilizer companies today use a polymer coating that prevents fertilizers from burning your lawn.
